Introduction
Tobacco use remains one of the leading causes of preventable deaths worldwide, contributing to non-communicable diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and respiratory disorders. Despite global and national efforts to regulate tobacco, enforcement gaps, illicit trade, and the tobacco industry’s influence continue to undermine tobacco control measures.
Law enforcement plays a crucial role in implementing tobacco control policies, particularly in preventing illicit trade, enforcing smoke-free regulations, and protecting public health. The establishment of a Tobacco Control Special Interest Group (SIG) within the Global Law Enforcement and Public Health Association (GLEPHA) will provide a structured platform to mobilize law enforcement professionals, public health experts, researchers, and advocates to strengthen tobacco control efforts globally.
Objectives of the Tobacco Control SIG
- Capacity Building: Enhance the knowledge and skills of law enforcement officers on tobacco control laws, illicit trade, and enforcement strategies.
- Research and Policy Advocacy: Generate and disseminate evidence on the role of law enforcement in tobacco control to inform policy improvements.
- Networking and Collaboration: Create a global network of law enforcement professionals, researchers, and public health practitioners working on tobacco control.
- Public Awareness and Engagement: Raise awareness about the dangers of tobacco and the importance of enforcement in reducing tobacco-related harm.
- Support for Implementation: Assist governments and organizations in implementing effective tobacco control policies, including compliance monitoring and enforcement.
Roles and Responsibilities of Members
The SIG will be composed of law enforcement professionals, public health experts, researchers, policymakers, and advocates who share or would like to share a commitment to tobacco control. Membership with key roles and responsibilities are not yet finalized.
Communication and Information Sharing
To ensure effective coordination and dissemination of information, the SIG will utilize multiple channels, including:
- Email and Newsletters: Regular updates on activities, research findings, and opportunities.
- Social Media & Online Platforms: Engage members and the public through LinkedIn, Twitter, and a dedicated section on the GLEPHA website.
- Conferences and Workshops: Organize sessions at GLEPHA events and other international public health and law enforcement conferences.
- Reports and Publications: Produce periodic reports, policy briefs, and research papers on tobacco control enforcement.
